ENGIE’s businesses in Egypt

ENGIE is present in Egypt since 1948 especially through its Exploration and Production of natural gas activities. The Group holds both onshore and offshore exploration or production licences, is developing renewable energy projects, and is interested in rolling out its energy services know-how.

Egypt’s population reached 90 million at the end of 2015.  Egypt’s economy predicts a growth of around 5%.  ENGIE is present in Egypt since 1948 especially through its E&P activities.

Exploration and Production of Natural Gas

In Egypt, ENGIE’s E&P affiliate is active on three concessions:

Idku site

  • Wadi Dib & East Wadi Dib, onshore exploration concession in the southeast part of the country (wholly owned by ENGIE E&P, operator)
  • Alam El Shawish West is an onshore production concession and is located in in the Western part of the country. The development of the gas fields started in 2010 with the construction of an early production facility that brought gas on stream in July 2010. At the end of 2016, the cumulated production from AESW reached 57.8 million barrels of oil equivalent, the estimated remaining 2P reserves are of 66 million barrelsl of oil equivalent (ENGIE E&P holds 25%, non-operator)
  • Ashrafi is an offshore production licence. The production phase began in 1992. ENGIE E&P holds 50% non-operating stake in this licence since 2010. At the end of 2016, the cumulated production from Ashrafi reached 107 million barrels of oil, the estimated remaining 2P rserves are of 6.5 million barrels of oil. offshore production concession in the Gulf of Suez (ENGIE E&P holds 50%, non-operator)

Natural Gas and LNG

ENGIE holds a 5% stake in the train 1 of the Idku gas liquefaction plant and a 20-year Liquefied Natural Gas supply contract with ELNG. ENGIE also signed in April 2016 a cooperation agreement with EGAS to support its efforts to fulfill Egypt’s medium term gas import needs.

Power Generation

ENGIE is actively developing its power activities especially in wind energy (Gulf of SUEZ : 250 MW) ENGIE is also developing the West of Nile project composed of wind, PV and CSP.

Energy Services and Efficiency

ENGIE is interested in the development of its energy efficiency services businesses and smart cities solutions.
