ENGIE reaffirms longstanding commitment to SA's energy security

ENGIE Group CEO Catherine MacGregor recently attended a breakfast meeting in Paris, France with South Africa’s Deputy President Honourable Paul Mashatile, as part of the South Africa–France Investment Conference (19-24 May 2025). Catherine reaffirmed ENGIE’s longstanding commitment to South Africa, where the company has been operating for over 15 years with 14 energy assets. She highlighted ENGIE ambition to grow their footprint further and play a bigger role in strengthening South Africa’s energy security.

A key focus of the discussions was the critical role of the Avon and Dedisa Peaking Power, which are vital in stabilising South Africa’s electricity grid, managing fluctuating power demands, and reducing the risk of load shedding. ENGIE operates the Avon and Dedisa plants, the first large-scale privately-owned power plants in South Africa, jointly capable of delivering 1005MW, equivalent to alleviating a full stage of load shedding. Under a 15-year Power Purchase Agreement with Eskom, these plants are among the premier privately owned power generating assets in South Africa.

Deputy President Mashatile emphasised the South African government’s priority to attract investment – particularly R1 trillion in infrastructure over the next three years – to fuel growth and transformation. The meeting reflected the strong partnership between South Africa and France, and the shared focus on sustainable development and inclusive progress ☀️📈.
