ENGIE South Africa has appointed Sanjeev Mungroo as Managing Director: Renewables and Batteries, effective 1 January 2026. His appointment marks both a strategic step forward for the company’s growth in South Africa and a personal full-circle moment as Mungroo was the company’s third employee when it first established operations in the country.
Mungroo joins ENGIE from Nedbank, where he played a pivotal role in building one of the most successful energy finance divisions in the region. Over more than two decades in South Africa’s energy sector, he has built an extensive network across the country’s energy value chain and has hands-on experience spanning engineering, finance, infrastructure, operations, and business development.
His career has included roles at ABB, Eskom, and GDF Suez, where he worked across utility-scale renewable energy projects, embedded generation initiatives, and emerging energy trading platforms now shaping South Africa’s evolving electricity market.
In his new role, Mungroo will lead ENGIE’s Renewables and Batteries global business unit in South Africa, overseeing development, construction, operations, and engineering activities across the company’s growing project portfolio. He will report directly to Mo Hoosen, Country Manager at ENGIE Southern Africa.
“Sanjeev brings a rare combination of technical grounding, commercial acumen, and market insight,” says Hoosen. “His experience across finance, infrastructure, and project execution will be instrumental as ENGIE expands its renewable and battery footprint in South Africa. It is also meaningful to welcome back someone who was present at the very beginning of our journey here.”
Mungroo’s return comes at a time when South Africa’s electricity sector is undergoing fundamental reform, with new procurement programmes, private transmission development, and market liberalisation opening space for accelerated investment in clean generation and storage.
“ENGIE has been part of South Africa’s energy story from the early days of the IPP programme,” says Mungroo. “Coming back to lead Renewables and Batteries at this moment feels like a natural continuation of that journey. I look forward to helping deliver projects that strengthen the grid, support communities, and advance the country’s energy transition.”
